PHOTOGRAPHING PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS PORTRAITS OF TWO UW- MADISON SCIENTISTS

professional business portrait of UW Madison chemistry professor Helen Blackwell

About photography assignment:

This photo assignment was a second time editorial team from UW College of Letters & Science reached out to me. First time I photographed a professional portrait of University of Wisconsin Economics department professor David Johnson.

This time Letters & Science magazine team wanted me to photograph 2 portraits of professors and scientists for the upcoming Letters & Science magazine 2019 Spring issue.

Portrait of botany professor

First on my list was Ann Pringle. She’s a professor of botany at the Pringle Lab at the UW Madison. Her research deals primarily with fungi. Initial idea was to photograph an environmental portrait possibly incorporating fungi and her lab in UW Department of Botany.

When I arrived to Birge Hall, it I realized Ann’s fungi lab will work for the photoshoot. As well as outdoors. Because of “February in Madison, Wisconsin” kind of situation. So, I ended photographing Ann’s portrait in University of Wisconsin Botanical Garden’s greenhouse.

Portrait of chemistry professor

Next on my list was Helen Blackwell. She’s organic chemistry professor at UW Madison. I met Helen in UW Department of Chemistry and photographed her in The Blackwell Lab.

Chemistry laboratory offered a variety of backgrounds to choose for an environmental portrait. In order show as much professors work environment as possible, I ended up going with my wide-angle lens.
